Practices with Promise:

Instructional Leadership for Real World Success

Keynote Presenter—Day 1:

Willard Daggett

Willard Daggett is known worldwide for his efforts to move the education system towards more rigorous and relevant skills and knowledge for all students. He is the Founder and President of the International Center for Leadership in Education. Dr. Daggett has held teaching and administrative positions at the secondary, two-year college, four-year liberal arts college and university levels. He directed the restructuring initiatives for the State of New York’s education system to focus on the skills and knowledge students need in today’s technological, information-based society. In the past two years, he has also assisted over 300 school districts and several state departments of education in their school reform initiatives. He is published extensively and is well known as the designer of the Application Model, which provides a framework to determine the rigor and relevance of curriculum and assessment to real-world situations. His discussions will include practical broad-based perspectives to the issues facing education.

Keynote Presenter—Day 2:

Thomas Guskey
An astute and entertaining speaker, Thomas Guskey will help us understand more about the impact of improving student learning with standards and assessments. Dr. Guskey is Professor of Education at the University of Kentucky and a prolific writer. His presentation will show how performance assessments make a real difference for students only when they are used as part of the instructional process at the classroom level. He focuses on a variety of ways to set clear learning goals, gather useful information, and document student learning progress in the context of modern classrooms. You will learn how to: use classroom assessments as effective learning tools, to integrate performance assessments with more traditional testing and evaluation methods, to align assessment procedures with important learning goals, and how these procedures will allow them to better meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind.
