The School Culture Quality Survey (SCQS) is an instrument designed to assist efforts in the development of school culture in ways that make the school a superior place for teachers and staff to work, and for students to learn. The instrument contains 36 scored items, which are divided into four scales, Shared Vision, Facilitative Leadership, Teamwork, and Learning Community. Responses are analyzed and reported in a color-bound summary report utilizing charts, graphs, and summarized data. The scales and responses suggest the extent to which the faculty and staff:

  • see themselves as participants in a shared vision (Shared Vision).
  • view leadership of the school to be actively facilitating their work (Facilitative Leadership).
  • view themselves as working together cooperatively and effectively in an atmosphere of mutual respect and caring (Teamwork).
  • perceive that faculty, staff, and administration are eagerly investing, learning, and working together toward realization of the vision and goals they share (Learning Community).

"Changing the culture of schools in positive ways is a major leadership challenge. Gathering information about the perceptions of the school culture held by faculty and staff is an important first step" according to the School Culture Quality Survey developer, Dr. William Katzenmeyer, Dean Emeritus of USF’s College of Education and former Director of the David C. Anchin Center.
